Brandon Teena

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brandon Teena (* December 12, 1972 in Lincoln , Nebraska , USA as Teena Renae Brandon, † December 31, 1993 near Humboldt , Nebraska, USA) found his identity as male. Brandon's body was female. He was raped and murdered a few days later.

Life and murder

In 1993 Brandon had lived and identified himself as a man for several years and was in the process of gathering information about his “being”. He had not started hormone therapy but was considering sex reassignment surgery . The main obstacle were material reasons: With no support from his family and no apartment of his own, he got by with odd jobs and petty crime.

In a small town in Nebraska, he fell in love with Lana Tisdale, a young woman who initially didn't know he was transgender. Lana felt drawn to Brandon, but was obviously overwhelmed by the circumstances.

Two friends of Lana, John Lotter and Marvin Nissen, had met Brandon and initially accepted him as a “buddy”. When they found out that he had a female body, they refused to accept it. They felt cheated and wanted to give him a " lesson " by raping and beating him up. A few days later, on December 31, 1993, they shot him and two witnesses, Lisa Lambert and Philip DeVine, in Humboldt, Nebraska .

Lotter and Nissen were convicted of murder. Nissen admitted in court that he was involved in the killings, but Lotter had fired all fatal shots at the victims. Based on an agreement with the public prosecutor's office, Nissen was then sentenced to three life imprisonment. Lotter was sentenced to death . In 2007, Nissen retracted his confession, claiming that he, not Lotter, had fired all the shots. Lotter's appeal based on this revocation was rejected. The death penalty has not yet been carried out (2017). In 2017, Lotter appealed his death sentence for being unconstitutional.

Movies

In 1995, director Kimberly Peirce first made a short film in which she retold the story of Brandon Teenas based on the documentary The Brandon Teena Story . In 1999 she turned it into the full-length feature film Boys Don't Cry . For her leading role in it, actress Hilary Swank received an Oscar and a Golden Globe .
