Bratholm ( Norwegian for Steep Island ), known as Steepholm in English-speaking countries , is an island in the archipelago of the Southern Orkney Islands . It is the southernmost in the northern group of the Robertson Islands , lies immediately north of Skilling Island and forms the northern boundary of a navigable channel through the Robertson Islands.

The discovery of the Robertson Islands goes back to the captains George Powell and Nathaniel Palmer in December 1821. The Norwegian whaling captain Petter Sørlle named the northern group of these islands without Matthews Island , which he mistakenly believed to be part of Coronation Island after his measurements between 1912 and 1913 , initially as Bratholm , later corrected by him in the plural form Bratholmene . The name Bratholm was limited from another side to the island described here. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee transferred the name to the English form Steepholm after a survey of the island by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey between 1948 and 1949.
