Brattøya (German Steep Island ) is a Norwegian island in the Iddefjord . It belongs to the municipality of Halden in the province of Viken .

description

The island is located around 200 m south of mainland Norway at the western end of Halden, east of the Sauøya peninsula. Brattøya has a length of around 920 m (east-west extension), a width of around 700 m (north-south extension) and an area of 0.64 km². The highest point of the island is an elevation in the western part of the island with 76 meters moh. The banks rise steeply to the upper, almost plateau-like part of the island (hence the name) and it is almost completely overgrown with coniferous forest.

history

The island was previously inhabited and at times also had a manor house . Around 1900, six people lived on the island, whose former houses can still be guessed at from the remains of the foundation walls.

In the 1950s, the island came to the Halden municipality and was a nature reserve for a while .

Trivia

  • At the beginning of the 20th century, the then Norwegian King Håkon VII occasionally hunted rabbits on Brattøya.
