Controversy about "Grenzzaun Halbe"
Against the background of the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 , the brewery launched a beer called Grenzzaun Halbe in March 2016 . The brewery wanted to draw attention to the fact that in their opinion the current refugee policy is not working. In addition to the topic and the apparent demand for a border fence, the brewery received a lot of criticism, both for the use of the refugee misery for marketing purposes and for transporting xenophobic resentments, as well as for the price, 0.88 euros ( 88 is the Nazi number code for Heil Hitler ) and the best before date, November 9, 2016 (anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht ).
In its statement, the brewery stated that it did not want to send any right-wing messages. The price is actually 0.80 euros, plus 0.08 euros returnable deposit in Germany . The best before date is determined automatically on the filling day. For the bottom-fermented beers of Röhrlbräu it is eight months and the beer was bottled on March 9, 2016. The beer was originally supposed to be called Bayern Halbe , but the name had already been taken. In addition, each a bottle opener case should, in connection with the border fence Half then Grenzöffner called to be settled. However, the production of this bottle opener was not finished on time. The brewery has also been confirmed in the region that it provided trucks and donated drinks during the refugee crisis and that it has been socially committed for years. In addition, November 9th is also the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall .
Nevertheless, due to the high media coverage, the brewery withdrew the beer from the market on March 22nd, 2016 with an emphatic apology for the interpretations and misunderstandings that had arisen. Student representatives from the University of Regensburg criticized the brewery for not distancing itself from the suggestion that refugees are a danger to society. They stopped working with the brewery. On eBay , a box of Grenzzaun halves (container with 20 bottles of 0.5 l) were auctioned for up to 200 euros on the day after the market recall .
Regardless of the controversies surrounding the Grenzzaun Halbe , the Brother Straubinger 2.0 crown cap is used today on the Bayern Liebe brand , which depicts a skull with a cylinder (on which the brewery was founded).
