Geographical distribution and occurrence
The brown banded leaf tensioner is widespread from western and central Europe including the British Isles through the temperate zone to East Asia. It can be found in northern Europe as far as southern Fennoscandinavia . The species prefers to live in open forests and forest edges, but also occurs on meadow areas.
Way of life
The nocturnal moths usually fly in two generations from mid-May to mid-July and late July to mid-September. In England there is usually only one generation per year. The moths appear at night in artificial light sources . The first generation of caterpillars can be found in the months of July to August, the second in September and October. The species overwinters as a pupa . The caterpillars' diet includes, in particular, the leaves of certain bedstraws ( Galium ): forest bedstraw ( Galium sylvaticum ), white bedstraw ( Galium album ) and real bedstraw ( Galium verum ).
