The house at Breite Straße 23 is a listed building in the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is a residential and commercial building.

Architecture and history

The building is located on Breite Straße , one of the city's main shopping streets. It is three stories. The roof was also removed. There is a continuous dormer window with five windows facing Breite Straße. The street front of the building was built with functional, simple half-timbering.

Shops have been on the lower floor of the building since the end of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy are the seven wooden pillars on the ground floor, which are decorated with several carvings. The entrance door to the residential building is also heavily decorated. There are doors to the left and right to the two shops.

Before 1895 the building was called Breite Straße 194 . At that time it was a residential building with a courtyard, a brewery on the left, a malt house, a stable on the left, a barn across, two stables on the right, a new guard's house in 1881/82.

On April 25, 1887, the house was completely destroyed by fire. In the years 1890/91 it was rebuilt as a residential house with a courtyard (1905 conversion), wash house (1905 demolition and new construction), brewery with stable and ice cellar, shed at the back, stable and shed on the right. At that time, the owner of the house was the brewer and brewery owner Heinrich Kaufmann.

Immediately to the right of the house in February 1944 an aerial bomb hit and destroyed the upper floors of the neighboring building.

The house is listed as a monument in the monument register of the city of Wernigerode under registration number 094 03261.
