Breitling between Poel and the mainland

The Breitling is a narrow arm of the sea between the island of Poel and the mainland in the northeast of the district of Northwest Mecklenburg . It represents the connection of the inner Wismar Bay , starting south of the Poeldamm, with the Salzhaff (mouth of the Zaufe and Gollwitz brooks).

The Breitling is a very shallow body of water, usually less than one meter deep. Large parts can fall dry at low tide , whereas at high tide the flat Poeldamm can be flooded. In the south, the road connection on Fahrdamm (Poeldamm) leads over a flat peninsula to Poel over the Breitling. The inlet is about five kilometers long and a maximum of one kilometer wide.

Islands

The Breitling is home to the islands of Ahrendsberg , Baumwerder , Grot Deil and Weidenschwanz (all in the Blowatz municipality ) and Kastenwerder (in the Insel Poel municipality ). The flat and, except for Ahrendsberg, very small islands are uninhabited.

Flora and fauna

In terms of landscape, short high banks alternate on the mainland side, on the south banks of the small islands Baumwerder and Ahrendsberg and on the Poeler coast with very shallow flooded sections. These mark salt grassland areas with alluvial islands and banks interspersed with tidal creeks . The higher areas are usually very dry and are affected by sparse vegetation, e.g. B. dry grasslands marked with thorn bushes.
