The Salzhaff in the northeast of the Mecklenburg Bay

The Salzhaff is a part of the Mecklenburg Bay that is almost separated from the Baltic Sea by the spit of the Wustrow peninsula and the Boiensdorfer Werder peninsula . It is located south of the town of Rerik in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and northeast of the island of Poel in central Mecklenburg . The Hellbach flows into the Salzhaff.

The Wustrow peninsula was used for military purposes until the Soviet Army withdrew in the early 1990s; the Kroy bay in the western part of the Salzhaff and the offshore sandy island of Kieler Ort are under nature protection . The Salzhaff is a popular holiday and relaxation region. The shallow water is suitable as a starting point for sailors and surfers.

The Salzhaff has species-rich salt marshes that were created due to regular flooding. These salt marshes also serve as a botanical reserve to preserve the plants. Many water bird species are also at home here.

According to calculations by the German Weather Service (DWD), the Salzhaff region has a total of 1694 hours of sunshine per year on average.

The salinity of the brackish water in the Salzhaff region is 12 per thousand, with internal waters usually having a significantly lower salinity. However, there is a continuous exchange of water with the Baltic Sea through a 9 meter deep channel. This lies between Kieler Ort and Boiensdorfer Werder. Furthermore, only a little fresh water is fed to the Salzhaff through other inlets. The Salzhaff owes its name to this peculiarity and is the main cause of the fauna and flora that exist there.
