The distillery is located in the municipality of Werfen in the St. Johann im Pongau district in the state of Salzburg (Markt 24). It is located opposite the nursing court building and was built in place of several older houses. One of them belonged to the Gollinger and Werfener Wolfgang Brenner.

history

In 1560 Archbishop Michael von Kuenburg acquired the building and other land from the estate of the keeper of Werfen, Blasius von Keutschach , in order to establish a bishopric here. Due to his early death († November 17, 1560) he could not carry out this plan. His successor, Archbishop Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi , commissioned the court architect Jörg Vischer to build the new building.

However, the Brennhof never became an archbishop's residence. Rather, it served as accommodation for the mining and forestry offices; the western storage tract was used as a salt and grain box. Apartments were set up for the servants.

Between 1849 and 1854, the district administration Pongau was housed here. In 1856 the building was sold to Erasmus Kirchberger, who set up a brewery here. In 1912 Archduke Eugen , who had already bought Hohenwerfen Fortress in 1898 , acquired the Brennhof. In 1925 he made it available to the municipality of Werfen, which has owned the facility ever since.

Brennhof today

The three-story building has remained almost unchanged since its foundation. It has ten window axes on the street side. The main portal and three windows on the first floor have a fish bubble tracery . The entrance to the inner courtyard is possible through a vaulted corridor . The southern wing has a two-storey renaissance arcade with the archbishop's coat of arms, dated 1565. The seven arcades on the ground floor carry 16 arcades on the first floor with a groin vault and round columns with chalice capitals. The western wing is set off by a staircase. This is where the box and bulk floor used to be .

Today the Werfen municipal office, various clubs and an event center are housed here. Part of the building is used for apartments. The event room with a ribbed vault and stone pillars (former horse stable) is located on the ground floor of the south wing. Various folk events (e.g. the Werfen Christmas market) take place in the Brennhof.
