Brenton Thomas Broadstock (born December 12, 1952 in Melbourne ) is an Australian composer .

Life

Broadstock was born into a Salvation Army family . He first studied history, political science and music at Monash University in Melbourne. He later studied composition and music theory with Donald Freund at the University of Memphis and with Peter Sculthorpe at the University of Sydney . In 1987 he received the Doctor of Music.

From 1982 to 2006 he taught in Melbourne, most recently as a professor of composition. In 1988 he was a fellow of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation at the Bellagio Center in Italy. In 1990 his 2nd symphony was presented to the International Tribune des compositeurs of UNESCO. In 1999 he was visiting professor at Indiana University Bloomington . His work Gates of Day was played to more than 10,000 guests at the 2001 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts . In 2008 his music played at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2009 he was composer in residence with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra .

His compositions were u. a. Represented at the Berlin Music Biennale , Darmstadt Summer Courses , Musica Viva and BBC Proms .
