Brett Elliot Crozier (born February 24, 1970 in Santa Rosa , California ) is an American captain in the United States Navy . He served as the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt until early April 2020 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1988, Crozier attended the United States Naval Academy until 1992 and completed his naval aviation training in 1994. He then served as a Seahawk pilot on the frigate USS Crommelin and the destroyer USS Fletcher in the Pacific and in Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf . After pilot training for the F / A-18 Hornet , he served on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 . In 2007 he was transferred to Naval War College , where he received a Masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies . After further assignments as commander of Kampfgeschwaders 94 (VFA-94) and with the Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO , he completed the Naval Nuclear Power Training Program in 2014 and then served as an executive officer on the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan until July 2016 . In June 2017 he took command of the USS Blue Ridge , which he held until November 2018. In November 2019 he became the commandant of the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Crozier attracted greater media attention at the end of March 2020 when, during the COVID-19 pandemic , he wrote to the Admiralty calling for the evacuation of the ship lying in front of Guam , as around 100 of the 4,000 crew members were sick with COVID-19 and he was one feared rapid spread on board with fatalities. Since the letter was also published in the San Francisco Chronicle , Crozier was sharply criticized by the US government for not complying with the prescribed official channels and on April 2, 2020 by the United States Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly of his command delivered. The circumstances surrounding his dismissal led to vehement public criticism of Modly, who resigned from his post on April 7, 2020. After his replacement, Crozier tested positive for an infection with the corona virus.

Crozier received many awards, including the Legion of Merit .
