Brezje is a village in Croatia in the County of Međimurje . It is located about 5 kilometers northwest of Čakovec .

history

The first written documents that testify to the village of Brezje can be found at the beginning of the 13th century. In 1350 the Medjimurje region came into the possession of Duke Lackovic and became a united property. From the 17th century (February 22, 1672) a list of the petty aristocrats has been received. The nobility is given according to the place of ownership, even military service was assigned according to the size of the property. The aristocrat Stjepan Horvat or Bubimilovic from Brezje had to provide two riders. The petty aristocrats who owned Brezje at this time were Cinder, Horvat and Trajber. During the time of the Hungarian occupation, Brezje was called Nyireszfalva (Nyrfa - the birch, falu - the village). Allegedly Brezje got its name because of the large number of birch trees that were there, but today you cannot find a single birch tree in Brezje.
