The Bridge of Keig is a road bridge near the Scottish town of Keig in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the bridge was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.

history

The viaduct was completed in 1817. The important Scottish engineer Thomas Telford was responsible for the planning of the Bridge of Keig . The construction work was carried out by the local stonemason William Minto , who among other things built the Potarch Bridge at Kincardine O'Neil for Telford . An estimate from 1815 put the cost of construction at £ 2054. The actual construction costs came to £ 2,300, half of which was borne by the state.

The viaduct spans the Don a short distance southeast of Keig with a lined segment arch . In terms of construction, the Bridge of Keig is based on the usual Telford scheme for bridges in the Highlands , but it is relatively simple in design. With a clear width of 31 meters, it is one of the longest single-arched granite bridges in Scotland. Their covered granite parapets fan out to both approaches. The Bridge of Keig leads the B922 over the Don.
