Brightwell Castle

Brightwell Castle is an Outbound castle in the village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell between cities Didcot and Wallingford in the English county of Berkshire (now Oxfordshire ).

King Stephen had the castle built in 1145. At that time there was Anarchy , a civil war between King Stephen and his cousin, Empress Matilda , whose headquarters were in nearby Wallingford Castle . In 1153, Matilda's son, later King Henry II , destroyed Brightwell Castle.

A mansion was later built on the property .
