Britannia superior

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman province of Britannia superior emerged from the division of the province of Britannia ( Britannia ). Although the exact delimitation to the neighboring province of Britannia Inferior is not known, one can determine by inscriptions that this province included the south of England including Wales as well as the present-day region of East Anglia ; their capital was Londinium , today's London . Its director was an imperial legate in consular rank. In the 4th century AD, the administrative reform of Emperor Diocletian further divided the province, probably first into the provinces of Britannia prima and Britannia Caesariensis , the latter a little later into the provinces of Maxima Caesariensis and Flavia Caesariensis .
