Brittain Group was an assembly plant for motor vehicles and thus part of the automotive industry in Ireland .
Company history
The company was founded in 1970 when Brittain Smith and Company was split up. The seat was in Dublin . The assembly of automobiles continued. The parts initially came from the Austin Motor Company and the Morris Motor Company , possibly also from Riley .
In 1971 Booth Poole & Company was taken over.
In 1974 the British Leyland Motor Corporation terminated the agreement. For 1975 there are still some Morris, but none Austin survived. More than 1000 employees had to be laid off. Brittain signed a contract with Nissan and assembled Datsun . These were the first vehicles of Japanese origin to be assembled in Ireland. The timing is a bit unclear. It is listed as the start of production in both 1973 and 1975, with it being clear that Datsun have been sold in Ireland since 1973. In 1977 bankruptcy followed .
Nissan Ireland continued the Datsun assembly.
vehicles
The Morris Minor was assembled until 1971. From Riley it was the 4/68 , although it remains unclear whether of the only seven Riley produced in 1970, only one was assembled by the Brittain Group.
The Datsun 1200 of the B 110 series was the first Datsun model. The B 210 series followed.
Production numbers
The following are the registration numbers of Austin, Morris, Riley and Datsun vehicles in Ireland for the years they were assembled by the Brittain Group. The figures for the first year also include the assemblies at the predecessor company, as splitting is not possible within one year.
