Broddenbjerg idol

The Broddenbjerg idol (also the Broddenbjerg man) is a little worked ithyphallic anthropomorphic wooden figure that was found in 1880 while cutting peat in a moor near Broddenbjerg, near Viborg in Jutland ( Denmark ). According to the more recent C14 dating , the figure is dated to 535-520 BC. BC, to the early Iron Age . It is the oldest stake god in Denmark.

The figure consists (like the pair of gods from Braak in Schleswig-Holstein of about the same age ) of an oak branch fork , which was chosen for its shape and is 88 cm high. The armless figure has two legs (one broken off) formed by the natural branches and an upright penis about 28 cm long, marked by incisions at the tip . With phalluses provided Astgabelidole - with up to three meters in length - are found mainly in northern Germany and Denmark ( Braak , Ejsbøl Moses , Forlev Nymølle and Rebild Skovhuse ).

According to Klaus Ebbesen, such cult images were erected on piles of stones according to the find situation. The head has a carved face with a pointed chin that suggests a beard. The right eye is more complete than the left. Other carved figures also have asymmetrical faces.

It is now in the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen.
