The Broderbunnen is a fountain in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland . It is part of the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of national importance .

history

On May 1, 1895, water from Lake Constance flowed into St. Gallen households for the first time. As a reminder of this, August Bösch created the Broderbrunnen at Multertor. The fountain, which attracts attention with its mermaids and animal figures, got its name from canton judge Hans Broder (1845-1891), who bequeathed the necessary money to the city in his will.

Its importance as a monument to the water supply explains why a well system was built at that time, which is not at all suitable for collecting water.

At the end of the 20th century, the statues were in urgent need of renovation and were therefore dismantled and brought to the St. Gallen art foundry for revision . There the statues were extensively restored and bronze copies of the originals were made. The originals were made of electroplated bronze, but had a plaster core. At the beginning of 2000, the copies were put back in their old location, while the originals were taken to the Historical Museum .

characters

At the top of the fountain stands a nymph clad only in a thin cloth . According to tradition, August Bösch ordered a nude model from Zurich for her design , which promptly led to a minor scandal, the intervention of the police and their rejection. It was only when Bösch refused to continue working that he was granted artistic freedom. The standing nymph is flanked by two others who are at her feet. Two levels below there are figures of three children riding aquatic animals (turtles, dolphins and a goose).
