Life

The ninth of ten children of a farmer from Ebnat in Toggenburg fell ill with scarlet fever at the age of five , which resulted in severe hearing loss . For this reason, Bösch attended the St. Gallen institution for the deaf and dumb for two years as an eight-year-old , after which he followed normal lessons with the help of lip reading . At the age of 10 he became completely deaf . From 1873 to 1875 he did an apprenticeship as a stone cutter in Riesbach , at the same time he attended classes in drawing and modeling at the canton school and at the Polytechnic in Zurich . Until 1879 he studied in Munich at the Royal School of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts .

From 1879 to 1884 Bösch lived in Paris , where he worked in various studios and graduated from the École des arts décoratifs in the evenings . He then worked as a sculptor in Zurich for over ten years; during this time he traveled several times to England and Italy . Valentin Walter Mettler did an apprenticeship at Bösch for two years. From 1895 to 1899 he created his most important work, the Broderbrunnen in St. Gallen, in which he combined elements of neo-baroque and art nouveau . On July 3, 1898, the patriot monument he created was inaugurated in Stäfa . He then returned to Zurich and took over Arnold Böcklin's studio . Bösch mainly created architectural sculptures , for example in 1904 on the Kreuzkirche in Zurich-Hottingen or in the Federal Palace in Bern . From 1901 he often stayed in Rome , where he was inspired by ancient works of art.
