history
Brooklyn Heights was part of the Brooklyn Township until 1903. Because of the high taxes in the township, the residents of Brooklyn Heights decided to plant their own community. The village had become prosperous through the cultivation of vegetables and their greenhouse cultures. Around 1885 Gustav Ruetenik and his sons built their first small glass house here, and a number of other greenhouses soon followed along today's Schaaf Road.
The first town hall was built soon after becoming independent as a municipality. Used prison cells were purchased by the City of Cleveland and were in use until 1960. In 1930 a new town hall was built, which was replaced in 1973 by a new community center. This still houses the fire brigade , the police station and other community facilities.
