The Brooksby Convalescent Home is a former yacht club house and later nursing home in the Scottish town of Largs in the Council Area North Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building was built around 1840 as a yacht clubhouse for the Glasgow merchant Matthew Perst . The architects David and James Hamilton are probably responsible for the design . From 1897 the building was used as a nursing home.

description

The two-story building is on Greenock Road , the Largs quayside, across from the Firth of Clyde . It shows the characteristics of the classical architecture. The west-facing front is constructed symmetrically. The windows are partly flanked by blind pillars and crowned by triangular gables. The entrance area is located on the short south facade, which is designed with three vertical axes, the left of which is set back. In the resulting corner of the building there is a more recent Harl- plastered elevator shaft that covers the original twin window . Several steps lead to the central entrance area. This is made with a portico and two square columns with capitals . The arched portal is designed with a combat window . The decorative balconies on the upper floor are bordered by balustrades . On the opposite north side, there is a one-story extension with a flat roof . The main building ends with a slate-covered hip roof .
