Brown's Folly

Brown's Folly. The Folly was once a landmark in the area, but was increasingly obscured by the surrounding open forest.

Brown's Folly is a Folly at Farleigh Road near the village of Bathford in the English county of Somerset . In 1988 the tower was listed as a historical building of the first degree. A 40-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest was also named after him in 1974 .

Colonel Wade Browne , the squire of Monkton Farleigh Manor House , had the tower built in 1845 to provide work for the local people in times of agricultural recession. It replaced a signal tower that had previously been on the site.

The tower has a square floor plan and tapers towards the top. The upper section has arched openings, the balustrades of which have disappeared.

In 1907 the owner of the estate, Charles Hobhouse , had the tower renovated. His hunting parties met at the tower. In 1938 it was proposed to demolish the tower, but this was never realized. The folly is structurally fine, but currently not open to the public. Since 1998 it has been maintained by the Folly Fellowship , which had the roof renewed.

An illustration of the Folly can be found in the unofficial coat of arms of the Bathford Town Council.
