The fountain on Carlsplatz in 2011

The stone fountain on Carlsplatz in Düsseldorf was created in 1958 by the sculptor Ferdinand Heseding (1893–1961). At that time, the square that still serves as a marketplace today was still written as Karlplatz .

The fountain is embedded in the cladding of the towering ventilation shaft of an air raid shelter , which lies under the square and dates from the Second World War .

Two figures are depicted on a stone relief over three fountain bowls, the spies Joshua and Caleb , who returned from the Promised Land for the people of Israel : "... and there they cut off a vine with a bunch of grapes and two of them carried on a pole ..." ( Numbers 13:23 ). In reference to the weekly market that takes place here, they hold a grape made from a variety of fruits. Above the well basin, at the feet of the two biblical figures, there are three gargoyles , two bronze fish on the outside and a stone fish in the middle.

At the upper end of the natural stone-clad ventilation shaft integrated into the fountain, you can see the relief of an electoral hat and the inscription “CARL THEODOR 1742–1799”. They commemorate the Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz , Duke of Jülich-Berg , after whom the Carlstadt district and the Carlsplatz with its fountain are named.

The system was financed by Stadtwerke Düsseldorf .
