Bruno Leibundgut (born April 1, 1960 in Basel ) is a Swiss astronomer .

Live and act

Bruno Leibundgut attended the humanistic grammar school in Basel until he graduated in 1979. He then studied physics, mathematics and astronomy at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1988. Since 1993 he has worked at the European Southern Observatory .

He was best known for new discoveries in the field of supernovae . He was a member of the High-Z Supernova Search Team and helped make VLT .

From 2008 to March 2013 he was the director of science at the European Southern Observatory. Since then he has been using a sabbatical to travel through Europe and give lectures on topics such as the origin of the elements or the structure of the universe.
