Bruno Tobback
Bruno Tobback (born August 22, 1969 in Leuven ) is a Belgian politician of the Socialist Partij Anders (sp.a). Tobback was Minister for the Environment and Pensions from 2004 to 2007 and was party chairman of the sp.a. from 2011 to 2015. He is the son of the former interior minister and incumbent mayor of Leuven, Louis Tobback (sp.a).
Life
Bruno Tobback holds a law degree ( Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), 1992) and a degree in social and economic law ( Ghent University (RUG), 1994). From 1992 to 1994 he did an internship at the European Commission in the service of Belgian Commissioner Karel Van Miert (SP). In 1994 he was registered as a lawyer in Brussels and was active there until 2001.
His political career began in 1995, first as a member of the Provincial Council of Flemish Brabant and in the same year as a member of the Flemish Parliament . In 2001 Tobback took over the chairmanship of the sp.a. In 2004 Tobback was re-elected to the Flemish Parliament, but stayed there only for a very short time, as he was appointed Minister for Environment and Pensions in the federal government of Verhofstadt II under Guy Verhofstadt ( Open VLD ).
After the big election defeat in 2007, the sp.a left the federal government, but Tobback remained a member of parliament. After the federal elections on May 25, 2014, he moved to the Flemish Parliament.
Bruno Tobback took over the chairmanship of the sp.a on September 18, 2011 after he was the only candidate to succeed Caroline Gennez (sp.a). Four years later, after the federal and regional elections on May 25, 2014, which were not very successful for the sp.a., he was replaced by John Crombez (sp.a) at the top of the party after he was defeated in the internal party election.
Bruno Tobback is a Grand Officer of the Order of the Leopold .
