The Brunswick East district is about six kilometers north of the "Central Business District". The district is bounded to the west by Lygon Street and Holmes Street, to the east by Merri Creek, to the south by Park Street, Nicholson Street and Glenlyon Road and to the north by Moreland Road. Brunswick East has both residential and commercial areas.
In 1839 the area around the city of Brunswick , including what is now Brunswick East, was surveyed. In an area of 1 mile by ¼ mile, lots were staked out, mostly bought up by speculators.
Significant settlement of the area took place in the 1880s and in the period after the First World War. In 1916 a tram was built and electrified along Lygon Street between Brunswick and Brunswick East.
