Grossedius Niger
Bruttedius Niger was a Roman rhetorician and politician of the early imperial era . He also emerged as the author of a historical work.
Life
Bruttedius Niger was a student of the rhetorician Apollodorus of Pergamon . Under Emperor Tiberius he officiated as aedile in AD 22 . In the same year he was one of the co-prosecutors of the consul of 10 AD, Gaius Junius Silanus . His accusers also included the declamator Iunius Otho , whom Bruttedius Niger apparently saw as a role model in rhetoric.
The historian Tacitus recognizes Bruttedius Niger's talent, but believes that his ambition led him to stray from the right path. According to the satirical poet Juvenal , Bruttedius Niger was initially a friend of the powerful Praetorian prefect Lucius Aelius Seianus , but whose body he trampled after his fall and death (31 AD).
Seneca the Elder received two passages from the historical work written by Bruttedius Niger , which deal with the murder of Cicero (43 BC). Seneca also provides excerpts from other historians of his time about the death of this famous speaker, such as Titus Livius , Gaius Asinius Pollio , Aufidius Bassus , Aulus Cremutius Cordus and the poem of Cornelius Severus .
