Bryan Davies, Baron Davies of Oldham , PC (born November 9, 1939 ) is a Labor member of the British House of Lords . He worked for the government as Deputy Group Leader in the House of Lords from 2003 to 2010 and, as usual in that position, he was also Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard .

Life

He studied at Redditch High School in Worcestershire . He graduated from University College London with a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1961. He graduated from the Institute of Education (PGCE 1962) and the London School of Economics in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.

He worked from 1962 to 1965 as a history teacher at The Latymer School, then he worked as a lecturer in history and social sciences from 1965 to 1974 at Middlesex University in Enfield . During this time he also worked as a union official with the National Association for Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE) . He has been a member of the Transport and General Workers' Union since 1979 .

He was a Member of the House of Commons (MP) for Enfield North from February 1974 until he lost the seat to Conservative Timothy Eggar in 1979 . From 1992 Davies represented the constituency of Oldham Central and Royton , until this was abolished in 1997 by border changes. On October 3, 1997, Davies was raised to life peer as Baron Davies of Oldham , of Broxbourne in the County of Hertfordshire .

Davies also served as Secretary of the Parliamentary Labor Party and in the Shadow Cabinet from 1979 to 1992. He also served as a member of the Medical Research Council from 1977 to 1979 and chaired the Further Education Funding Council from 1998 to 2000. In 2006 he became a member of the Privy Council appointed.
