Buariki is the largest of the Kuria Islands , which are part of the Gilbert Islands in the Republic of Kiribati .

geography

Buariki is the main island, which is only separated from Oneeke in the west by a 20 meter wide channel (low water area Te breeti ). It used to be spanned by a bridge. Today the islands are connected by the Itintoa Causeway , which is only 10 meters long .

The islands are surrounded by a coral reef that is wider on the east side than on the west side. The atoll has no lagoon due to its shape, similar to two triangles that touch with the tips . The reef covers 13.02 km² on a base of 12.7 km². Buariki has a smaller boat canal through the reef near the main town of the same name in the west.

In the south of Buariki there are brackish fish farming ponds, the King's Fish Ponds .

Settlements

In Aranuka Atoll, southeast of Aranuka, there is also an island Buariki and a place of the same name. The homonym originated from the settlement of Kiribatians living on Tarawa , who had already founded a Buariki (North Tarawa) on North Tarawa after the first wave of immigration, which was important for the history of Kiribati .

The four settlements are on the west coast of the island:
