Bucas Grande is an island in the east of the Philippines , which belongs to the Philippine province of Surigao del Norte and is located in the Philippine Sea . The island has 22,314 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who live in 14 barangays . The entire island belongs to the administrative area of ​​the municipality of Socorro .

The area of ​​Bucas Grande is 124.45 km². The kidney-shaped island is hilly with low inclines and consists mostly of limestone , basalts in the center and young alluvial soils on the coasts with sandy beaches and mangrove forests . A rainforest grows in the interior of the island and dwarf forest in the northern part of the island. It belongs to the smaller archipelago of the Siargao Islands , which is located off the northeast coast of the main island of Mindanao. This archipelago also includes the islands of Siargao , Middle Bucas , East Bucas , Hinatuan , La Janosa , Anahawan and Dako .

The island is part of the large nature reserve Siargao Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape (SIPLAS) and has a rich flora and fauna . In 2011, 24 species of dragonflies ( Odonata ) alone were recorded. Bucas Grande is especially known for the Sohoton Bay, in which there are seven smaller islands with numerous cave systems. In the interior of the island is the Jellyfishlake , the Filipino version of the better known Ongeim'l Tketau on Palau . Just like on Palau, there is a non-toxic species of jellyfish in it .

The temperature remains around 30 degrees all year round; December to February is the rainy season. The residents speak Cebuano , Tagalog and English and are mostly Catholic. Bucas Grande can be reached via the ferry connections to the larger island of Siargao.
