The Buchanan Passage is a strait between the Liard and Adelaide Islands at the northern end of Hanusse Bay off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula .
Participants in the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot discovered and mapped this sea route. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him in 1974 after Peter William Buchanan (1925-2011) of the Royal Navy , commander of the Antarctic patrol ship HMS Endurance from 1968 to 1970.
