The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music (English: Buchmann-Mehta School of Music , BMSM) is a music school in Tel Aviv , Israel .

prehistory

Today's training center goes back to the Israeli Music Academy. It was originally founded as the Israeli Music Academy by high-ranking members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO), who fled Europe shortly after World War II , and has since been called the Samuel Rubin Israel Academy of Music . In 1966 it was integrated into the newly established Tel Aviv University, and in 1972 it became a cornerstone of the university's Yolanda and David Katz Faculty of Arts. The directors of the historical academy were among the founding fathers of the music world in Israel, the violist and composer Ödön Pártos , the pianist and conductor Arie Vardi , the composers Yehezkel Braun , Yizhak Sadai and Joseph Dorfman , the violinist Yair Kless and the composers Ami Maayani and Noam Sheriff .

structure

The facility belongs to the Faculty of Arts at Tel Aviv University and is operated in collaboration with the IPO. The school is named after the Jewish real estate investor and philanthropist Josef Buchmann from Frankfurt a. M. and the conductor Zubin Mehta . Mehta is honorary president of the school and regularly leads its symphony orchestra in Israel and on trips abroad. The task of the BMSM is to train young elite musicians in the field of performance practice , composition and music research and to prepare them for a professional career in these areas. The BMSM's orchestral education program is an integral part of the school and aims to qualify orchestral musicians to ensure the artistic future of the IPO and other orchestras in Israel.

The school building houses two concert halls (Clairmont Hall and Targ Hall) and a well-equipped recording studio. Around 200 concerts, lectures and master classes take place annually, many of them as part of the BMSM subscription concert series, named after the late Yehiel Ben-Zvi, former Vice President of Tel Aviv University. These events attract more than 2000 subscribers and numerous visitors annually, making the BMSM one of the busiest music centers in the country.

Zubin Mehta is honorary president.
