Noam Sheriff ( Hebrew נועם שריף; born on January 7, 1935 in Tel Aviv ; died on August 25, 2018 in Netanya ) was an Israeli composer .

Life

Sheriff studied composition and conducting with Paul Ben-Haim in Tel-Aviv, Boris Blacher in Berlin and Igor Markevitch in Salzburg and philosophy at the University of Jerusalem . He celebrated his breakthrough as a composer with Festival Prelude , a work that Leonard Bernstein premiered in 1957 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at the opening of the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv. From 1963 to 1989 he taught composition and conducting in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem . In 1990 he became a professor at the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv, which he headed from 1998 to 2000. In addition, he was director of the kibbutz chamber orchestra from 1973 to 1982 , taught instrumentation at the Cologne University of Music from 1983 to 1986 and was music director of the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon-LeZion from 1989 to 1995 . From 2002 he was director of the Israel Chamber Orchestra , in 2004 he took over the direction of the New Haifa Symphony Orchestra .

In 2011 he was awarded the Israel Prize .

Sheriff was married to the composer Ella Milch-Sheriff and they have two sons.
