Bay of Mónsul

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monsul Bay in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

The bay of Mónsul is located around 4 km southwest of the municipality of San José on the coast of Andalusia in Spain . Surrounded by dark volcanic rock and covered with fine gray sand, the 300 m long and 45 m wide beach is one of the most beautiful in Spain.

It is located in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park , the last almost unspoilt area on the Andalusian Mediterranean coast. The Sierra del Cabo de Gata, consisting predominantly of dark volcanic rock, with the 493 m high Pico de los Frailes as the highest mountain, covers most of the nature park . The region is only sparsely overgrown due to the drought. The mountains descend to the sea in the south to a steep coast, with numerous small bays and offshore cliffs have formed.

Due to its relative remoteness, the area was protected from tourist development. An environmental movement was active early on, which in 1984 successfully prevented a development project on the Bay of Mónsul. The declaration of the nature park was made on December 23, 1987, which at least makes further development more difficult in the future.
