The humpback spiny catfish or black humpback spiny catfish ( Bagrichthys macracanthus ) is a freshwater fish from tropical Southeast Asia .

features

Bagrichthys macracanthus has a uniformly dark, black-brown body color. On both sides of the body there is a central, light and narrow stripe that begins behind the gill covers and extends to the base of the caudal fin . The short and high dorsal fin and the paired fins are black-brown. The rear half of the anal fin and the caudal fin are whitish and transparent. The rounded adipose fin , which extends from the dorsal fin almost to the caudal fin, is typical of the species ; it is also black-brown.
The eyes are brightly colored. Four relatively short barbels are also typical of the species. The chin and lower jaw barbels are slightly fringed. Bagrichthys macracanthus reaches a total length of over 25 centimeters.

Distribution and ecology

Bagrichthys macracanthus is endemic to the Greater Sunda Islands of Borneo and Sumatra . Reports of mainland occurrences are based on confusion with other humpback catfish species. It lives in large, muddy rivers and feeds mainly on small crustaceans, molluscs, other small soil dwellers and rotting parts of plants.

Systematics

Bagrichthys macracanthus was described by the Dutch naturalist and doctor Pieter Bleeker in the genus Bagroides and, however, a few sections later, also as Leiocassis macracanthus . The holotype comes from the catchment area of the Lamatang and Enim rivers on East Sumatra; it is deposited as a poorly preserved preparation under the catalog number RMNH 5216 in the Naturalis - National Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden (Netherlands).
In the literature, Bagrichthys macracanthus was repeatedly confused with other bagrid catfish species. This also led to disagreements about the actual distribution. Only the description of Bagrichthys majusculus Ng 2002, which is very similar to Bagrichthys macracanthus , but is widespread in Indochina, in the catchment of the Mekong and the Chao Phraya, only became clear .

Importance to humans

Bagrichthys macracanthus is an aquarium fish that is regularly caught in the wild in pet shops . The breeding has not yet succeeded.
