A humpback mine is a portable, cabinet-like showcase that depicts a mine and is transported by the showman on his back (hump) .

The built-in models show a realistic and mostly detailed sectional view through a mine . Most of the various fixtures, such as mining art and the miners at their workplaces, can be moved and are driven by a hand crank or a machine. In addition, acoustic effects such as rhythmic hammer and bell strikes can be set in motion at the same time. Nowadays, the representations can also be specifically illuminated with electrical light.

With the display and demonstration of their humpback mines at trade fairs, fairs, folk festivals, etc., disabled miners (miners) improved their unfortunate social situation. They received support from the Knappschaftskasse , but this was very low. The humpback mines were mostly made by them themselves, for which various materials were used that were just available and easy to work with.

An earlier written reference to the first humpback mines can be found e.g. B. in Dankegott Immanuel Merkel's description of the Earth of Electoral Saxony and the countries that belong to it from 1804:

"... peep, the retraction and extension of miners working the Häuer , the carts running the Bergiungen , uphill trains u. the like vividly and flexibly ... "

The demonstration of a humpback mine is known from the 20th century as additional income, for example from the Freiberg original Alfred Mende . Its humpback mine, a massive wardrobe with colorfully painted models and figures made of wood, tin and bread dough, was preserved and can be viewed today in the historic Ratskeller on Freiberg Obermarkt .

In 1986, Thalheimer Peter Püchmann had the responsible authorities approve the demonstration of his humpback mining as a profession, which he still practices today.
