Buckle Island is an uninhabited, volcanic island in the Southern Ocean , about 200 miles from the Antarctic mainland. It is the middle of the three large Balleny Islands and belongs to the Ross sub-area , the Antarctic territory claimed by New Zealand .

Buckle Island is just south of the Arctic Circle , about 30 kilometers southeast of Young Island and 85 kilometers northwest of Sturge Island . The island has a few islets in the south, of which Sabrina Island (3.5 km south) is the most important. The emergency shelter “Sabrina Refuge” is located on it.

Buckle Island is about 15 miles long in north-south direction, up to 7.5 km wide in east-west direction and covers an area of 123.6 km². The island, almost completely covered by glaciers , reaches a height of 1238 meters above sea level.

In 1839 and 1899, columns of smoke were observed over the island, which were attributed to volcanic activity. Recent research has provided no evidence of current activity.

Several colonies of Adelie ( Pygoscelis adeliae ) and Chinstrap Penguins ( Pygoscelis antarctica ) live on Buckle as well as on Sabrina .
