Douglas John "Doug" Lishman (born September 14, 1923 in Birmingham , † December 21, 1994 in Stoke-on-Trent ) was an English football player . He was at the end of the 1940s until the mid-1950s, a successful middle and inside forward of Arsenal and won with the club in 1950, the FA Cup and three years later the English championship .

life and career

Lishman began his career at the amateur club Paget Rangers from Birmingham. After the Second World War he moved to FC Walsall , which was active in the third- tier Third Division South . After 26 goals in 59 league games, he went to Arsenal for £ 10,500 in the summer of 1948 , where he initially served as a replacement for the injury-prone Reg Lewis .

He made his debut on September 4, 1948 against Sheffield United and scored a promising 13 goals in 25 appearances. The two following seasons up to 1951, however, were marked by injuries and Reg Lewis and Peter Goring were preferred to him in the victorious FA Cup final in 1950 - another problem was his broken leg in December 1950 against Stoke City when he was on the Way to the regular player was. Nevertheless, he was the club's top scorer in the 1950/51 season and in the 1951/52 season he finally achieved the breakthrough with 30 goals. In the 1952 FA Cup final against Newcastle United , he hit the bar unluckily and lost 1-0 with his team.

Lishman was quickly compensated when he won the English championship in 1953 due to the better goal quotient over Preston North End and was again top scorer. The services also earned him in March 1953 an international match for the English B national team against the Scottish counterpart; he shouldn't be allowed to play for the senior team in his career. In the next two years Lishman was Arsenal's top scorer before he was ousted from the team in the 1955/56 season by the younger Derek Tapscott and David Herd .

Lishman was sold to Nottingham Forest by Arsenal FC in 1956 . With Forest he rose and after the title in the second division, he ended his active career. After retiring, he worked for an English pharmaceutical company and lived in Stoke-on-Trent until his death in 1994 .
