Budaejjigae [ pudɛ tɕ͈iɡɛ ] is a South Korean dish. The name means something like military base stew or troop stew . In this soup, Gochujang , ham ( Spam ), sausages , meat, beans, ramyeon , cheese , onions , kimchi , tofu , tteok and possibly other Korean vegetables and ingredients are added. An alternative name for the dish is "Johnson Tang" ( 존슨탕 ), which means something like "Johnson soup". It is debatable whether the name comes from former American President Lyndon B. Johnson , or simply from Johnson as a common surname in the United States .

The dish has its origins in the Korean War (1950–1953). Back then, people had little to eat. From bases of the US Army were leftovers or excess food, including ham and sausages, smuggled or bought. Some of these leftovers were mixed with inedible waste. These people mixed up with everything else they could find and cooked it in a large pot.

The city of Uijeongbu , which is home to many army bases, is known for Budaejjigae. There is also Uijeongbu Budaejjigae Street , where many restaurants specializing in the food are concentrated.

There are also many restaurants and restaurant chains across the country that specialize in Budaejjigae.
