Budapest Bábszínház ( German Budapest Puppet Theater ) is a puppet theater in the Hungarian capital Budapest . It is located at Andrássy út 69 on VI. District . It is one of the largest in Europe and offers performances for both children and adults.

history

The Budapest Puppet Theater is located in a historic building, which was built from 1875 to 1877 according to plans by the architect Adolf Láng , and in which several cabarets and the Chamber Theater of the National Theater ( Nemzeti Színház Kamaraszínháza ) have been operated since 1907 .

In 1947 there was a first puppet theater under the name Mesebarlang (German fairy tale cave ) with seats for 312 spectators.

The State Puppet Theater ( Hungarian Állami Bábszínház ) opened on October 8, 1949. At the time of the opening, the program included the three pieces Tavaszi virág , a Chinese fairy tale for which György Ligeti had written the music, as well as Kalács and Macskalak . These pieces were performed a total of seventy times. At that time it was the only professional puppet theater in Hungary and was to remain so for several decades. In 1958, Dezső Szilágyi became director of the theater for 33 years. In the 1960s, the theater's innovative productions drew the attention of the international art scene.

Between 1971 and 1976, the theater was rebuilt and expanded according to plans by the architect Mária Siklósi so that it could accommodate more visitors.

In 1992 it was renamed the Budapest Puppet Theater . The Budapest Puppet Theater has been touring all five continents more than seventy times and has received numerous awards at festivals at home and abroad.

repertoire

In addition to traditional productions for children, the repertoire includes classical and contemporary works by Hungarian and foreign authors, pieces inspired by fairy tales and folk art as well as commissioned works. Performances are often accompanied by musicians.

Current situation

There are now two venues, a large hall for around 400 and a studio for around 100 spectators. More than 100,000 visitors come to the 300 performances per season. In 2010 the BÁBU Festival was founded, which tries to break new ground to present puppet theater to children, adolescents and adults. The Budapest Puppet Theater has been participating in World Puppet Theater Day, which takes place on March 21 of each year, since 2014.
