Gasthof Zum Engel (Magdeburg)
The Gasthof Zum Engel is a listed building in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . It is used as a guest house and is considered a rare and unusually well-preserved example of a country inn from the early days .
location
The inn is located at Leipziger Chaussee 139 south of Magdeburg, free-standing on the Chaussee leading from Magdeburg to Halle (Saale) . The building, which is visible from afar and defines the landscape, is part of the Beyendorf-Sohlen district . Immediately north of the inn is a listed Prussian all-mile pillar . A little further south are the Classik Hotel and the Anker district .
Architecture and history
The inn was first mentioned in a document from 1842. This original building was demolished in 1889 and then replaced by today's buildings in 1892/93. An inn with relaxation was built for the landlord Emil Wöhlbier .
The two-story inn is designed as an elongated eaves brick building. The north and south facing gable walls are decorated with rich brick ornamentation. The facade of the ground floor is representatively structured in the neo-renaissance style . The building is covered by a flat gable roof . In the vestibule there is a wall structure through blind arcades . Doors and windows are still from the construction period. The large hall on the ground floor has large arched windows . The other windows have roofs with round gables.
Inside, the guest rooms and the dance hall are sophisticated. There are stucco and beamed ceilings, some of which are decorated with elaborate paintings.
During the 20th century, however, the gastronomic use was stopped. From 1990 the property was renovated and restored and finally operated as a guesthouse from 1995. The hall has been usable again since 2016.
In the local register of monuments , the building is listed as an inn with registration number 094 16041.
