Buenos Aires Jazz Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buenos Aires Jazz Festival is a music festival first organized by the Buenos Aires City Council in 2002 . It takes place at various venues and has reached around 36,000 listeners in recent years.

overview

The Buenos Aires Jazz Festival was inspired in part by the "café concerts" that were popular in major Argentine cities since the 1960s and 1970s. Another model was the Jazzología by Carlos Inzillo , which took place for the first time in September 1984 and is the oldest still existing jazz festival in Argentina.

In the 1990s, jazz festivals took place irregularly in various Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Rosario and La Plata . The current Buenos Aires Jazz Festival was, against all common sense, brought into being in the midst of the severe economic crisis of 2002 by the city administration of Buenos Aires and took place from 6 to 20 August 2002. Admission was free, mostly local musicians played, including notably Pablo Ziegler and Dino Saluzzi .

The success led to a sequel, which took place from April 10 to 16, 2003 with the participation of the Centro Cultural General San Martín . The events were no longer free, the artists also included the American Jane Blackstone . Since then, artists such as Kenny Barron , Anthony Braxton , Michael Brecker , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Ron Carter , Herbie Hancock , Fred Hersch , Freddie Hubbard , Rosa Passos , Chucho Valdés and Randy Weston have performed there. The pianist Adrián Iaies has been the festival's artistic director since 2007.
