Pablo Ziegler
Pablo Ziegler (born September 2, 1944 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine pianist, composer and arranger who is anchored in both the culture of Argentina and New York .
He studied at the Buenos Aires Music Conservatory , where he received the professorship in the subject of "piano". He continued his studies with Adrian Moreno and Galia Schaljman . He also studied composition with Professors Gerardo Gandini and Francisco Kröpfl .
The music
He is one of the most important musicians of contemporary Tango Nuevo . Thanks to the skill and charisma of his colleague Astor Piazzollas , in whose second quintet Pablo Ziegler played since 1978, he became known as a pianist. Since the end of the quintet in 1989, he has continued to develop his own form of "New Tango" or "Nuevo Tango".
His eccentric style as a pianist with sharp, rhythmic and metallic lyrics is very memorable and at times reminds of the playing style of Vladimir Horowitz and the melancholy of Bill Evans . In contrast to his teacher, his compositional technique is less contrapuntal than “ jazzy ” and also “ beaty ”, in which a regular basic beat , a somewhat simpler melody similar to bossa nova and extensive improvisational passages predominate. He has expanded the traditional tango repertoire to include South American and folk rhythms. In addition to Piazzolla, he played a. a. with Gary Burton , Joe Lovano , the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra , Branford Marsalis , Emanuel Ax , Quique Sinesi , Richard Galliano and many others.
His music has been heard in the theater since 1974, and he has been composing film music since 1985 . Pablo Ziegler has been on tour around the world continuously for years .
These recordings with Piazzolla are particularly remarkable:
- The Central Park Concert
- Tango: Zero Hour
- La Camorra
In recent years, Pablo Ziegler has devoted himself more to his orchestral work as well as to production and musical direction. He was musical director and composer for the CD Rojo Tango by Erwin Schrott it, for the Echo Klassik gave the division crossover. He received a Grammy Award in 2018 for the Latin jazz album Jazz Tango with the Pablo Ziegler Trio .
