course

The Buffalo River is formed in the city of Osseo in northeast Trempealeau County by the confluence of the northern and southern tributaries, both of which are approximately 16 miles long and arise in northwest Jackson County . From Osseo, the river flows west into Buffalo County , past the villages of Strum, Eleva, and Mondovi. At Mondovi there is a change of direction towards the southwest. The river flows into the Mississippi 3 km northwest of Alma . For the last 8 km of the route, the Buffalo is surrounded by marshland before it runs into Rieck's Lake, a stopover for thousands of migratory birds such as whistling swans and other waterfowl. Rieck's Lake in turn runs into a river-like lake, called Buffalo Slough, which is already part of the Mississippi.
