Bukan ( Persian بوکان), also called Bokan in Kurdish , is a city in northwest Iran .
Bukan has about 169,041 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the province of West Azerbaijan . It is located south of Urmia Lake at around 1,300 meters above sea level. The name bukan is believed to be derived from the Kurdish word būk-ān , which means “brides”. The population of Bukan is made up of Kurds .
