Bukoba is a district in the Tanzanian region of Kagera with the capital Bukoba , which is also the regional capital. The district is bordered by Uganda to the north, Lake Victoria to the east, Muleba district to the south, Karagwe district to the west and Missenyi district to the northwest .
geography
The Bukoba district has a size of 2,844 square kilometers and around 420,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). It is characterized by three mountain ridges that run from north to south. The easternmost ridge forms the Bumbire Islands, which are sixteen kilometers off the coast in Lake Victoria. The second ridge forms the steep lakeshore. At 1200 meters above sea level, it is not much higher than the lake, which is 1125 meters high. The third ridge in the west reaches a height of 1560 meters. Between the second and third ridge is the valley of the Ngono River. The climate is tropical, Am according to the effective climate classification . There is significant rain almost all year round, only in the months of July to August the rainfall is low at around 50 millimeters per month. The annual average of 700 to 1250 millimeters of rain falls. The average temperature is 21 degrees Celsius.

Facilities and services
- Health: There are 14 hospitals, 33 health centers and 266 pharmacies in the city council.
- Education: There are 961 primary schools in Bukoba Municipal for the education of young people. Josiah Kibira University has existed since 1999 and is run for non-profit purposes. It is financed from tuition fees and donations.
Economy and InfrastructureOf the almost 3000 square kilometers total area, 1045 are suitable for arable farming, 620 are pastures, 879 are forest or rock and 300 square kilometers are water. Agriculture with arable farming and cattle breeding is the most important form of economy. In addition, beekeeping is practiced, tourism and industry also play a role. The larger industrial companies deal with the production and processing of sugar, coffee and fish.

- Roads: There are 274 kilometers of national roads in the district, as well as 224 kilometers of paved and 263 kilometers of unpaved regional roads. The most important road is the national road T4, which leads from Mwanza in the south to Uganda.
- Airport: The airport has a runway that is 1,380 meters long and offers direct flights to Mwanza. In 2018, 52,000 passengers landed.
Nature reserves, sights
- Lake Victoria: In the east, the district has an almost 300 square kilometer portion of Lake Victoria. The rocky island of Musira is known, which used to be a prison island.
- Katuruka: The oldest iron smelting furnace in Southeast Africa was found here. It dates from the 5th century BC.
- Mater Misericordiae Church: This cathedral stands out because of its transparent glass bell tower.
