Bullerbü syndrome

The Bullerbü syndrome is a political catchphrase for an idealized and clichéd image of Sweden that many Germans have .

The stereotypical image of Sweden for many Germans consists of romanticizing positive associations. Elements of this naive-romantic idea are, for example, wooden houses, clear lakes, green forests, moose , blonde hair , happy people and the midsummer sun .

The term goes back to the children's book series " Wir Kinder aus Bullerbü " by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren , in which a romantic idyll of nature and society in Sweden is conveyed.

The director of the Goethe-Institut in Stockholm , Berthold Franke, contributed to the spread of the term with a highly acclaimed essay in the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet . According to his interpretation, the Bullerbü syndrome shows less the Germans 'love for Sweden, but rather the Germans' desire for a better Germany. Sweden represents an intact society and unspoiled nature.

The Swedish equivalent of the term “Bullerbysyndromet” was officially added to its vocabulary by the Swedish Language Council in February 2008.

An example of the Bullerbü syndrome, also named by Franke, are the romances and family stories set in Sweden by the German screenplay and novelist Christiane Sadlo , who writes under the pseudonym Inga Lindström . Over 40 of these romances have been filmed for ZDF with great success since 2004 . The stories are filmed in Sweden, but the content is largely decoupled from the real Swedish conditions.
