The Bullingerplatz is located in Zurich's city district 4, in the quarter hard . The square was named in 1922 and is named after Heinrich Bullinger (1504–1575), Zwingli's successor as head of the Zurich church. It begins at Sihlfeld- / Zypressenstrasse, ends at Bullinger- / Stauffacherstrasse and is framed by the Bullinger Church (built 1919–20, new building 1954–55) and the perimeter blocks of the residential colonies of the 1920s and 1930s.

history

Bullingerplatz was created in the interwar period as part of a new district development, which was made possible by the lowering of the Seebahn, which had been running at street level between the Wiedikon , Enge and Wollishofen stations , which was completed in 1927 . At the same time, building cooperatives built large courtyards around the new streets and squares, with which the Red Zurich wanted to meet the housing shortage that prevailed after the First World War with inexpensive apartments.

Bullingerplatz is the center of the 500 by 500 meter area between Badenerstrasse, Hardstrasse, Hohlstrasse and Seebahnstrasse. The star-shaped street layout - towards Bullingerplatz - is based on the ideal city scheme of the Renaissance and is unique for Zurich. At Bullingerplatz, six streets meet at irregular angles, as Sihlfeldstrasse (formerly the sloping path ) as a diagonal, primary axis, Stauffacher / Bullingerstrasse and Zypressenstrasse cross here. In order to create a square from the intersection, the city planner Konrad Hippenmeier extended the Stauffacherstrasse (then still Bäckerstrasse) as a 30 meter wide avenue beyond the railway line and led it slightly curved to Bullingerplatz. The continuation of the street to the west, today's Bullingerstrasse, was slightly offset to the south. The parish hall forms the western end, the ABZ colony Sihlfeld the northern and the double rectory (built 1947-48) the eastern.
