Bulusan or Mount Bulusan or Bulusan Volcano is the southernmost volcano on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It is located in the province of Sorsogon in the Bicol region , 70 kilometers southwest of the Mayon volcano and around 250 kilometers southeast of the capital Manila . The mountain has been part of the Bulusan Volcano National Park since 1934 .

construction

The Bulusan is a 1565 meter high stratovolcano with a base diameter of 15 kilometers. It is located in the northeast of a caldera with a diameter of around 11 kilometers that was formed around 40,000 years ago. The city of Irosin is located in the south of the caldera.

Bulusan has four craters and four hot springs . Crater number 1, called “Blackbird Lake”, is 20 meters in diameter and 15 meters deep. The oval crater 2 is 60 by 30 meters with a depth of 15 meters. Crater number 3 has a diameter of about 90 meters and is about 20 meters deep and crater number 4 in the northeast was created during the eruption in 1981. Below crater 4 there is another 100 meter long fissure that is 5 to 8 meters wide.

Eruptions

Bulusan has erupted 15 times since 1886.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) declared Alert Level 1 on March 19, 2006 after increased seismic activity was detected. On June 8, 2006, alert level 2 was declared after ash left the volcano. The next day, the ash cloud destroyed some houses in the nearby village of Casiguran , 5 kilometers north of the volcano and even reached the town of Sorsogon , 20 kilometers north of the Bulusan. On June 13, 2006, further craters were formed by smaller explosions.

On April 8, 2007, the volcano ejected ash up to five kilometers into the air. Scientists declared this to be a harbinger for further activities. The residents of the village of Casiguran at the foot of the volcano have been alerted.

The penultimate outbreak occurred on July 31, 2007 and lasted until October 2007. The second most recent outbreak occurred in November 2010. Around 2,700 residents of the cities of Irosin and Juban had to flee, and other villages had to be evacuated. The most recent eruption to date occurred on February 21, 2011, when the volcano spat a three thousand meter high column of ash. 1,200 residents had to be evacuated when visibility was extremely poor.
