The Bulusan Volcano National Park is located on the Bicol peninsula belonging to the island of Luzon in the Sorsogon province , approx. 250 km southeast of Manila and was originally established as a national park in 1935. On November 27, 2000, the National Park was re-evaluated according to Proclamation 421 in accordance with the guidelines of the National Integrated Protected Areas System . Since then it has been officially designated as Mount Bulusan Natural Park .

National park

The national park covers an area of ​​3,673 hectares . The eponymous volcano Bulusan reaches a height of 1,565 meters; it is described as an active volcano.

There are three main peaks in the national park: the active volcano Bulusan, which is characterized by many deep canyons and caves, Sharp Peak, which reaches a height of 1215 meters, and Mt. Jormahan.

The center of the mountain massifs is an area that is also known as the "Switzerland of the Orient" and includes two lakes, the outflowless Aguingay lake, which dries up in summer, and the Bulusan lake.

The region around the national park lies within the typhoon belt of the Philippines; therefore, some severe storms must be expected between September and November.

Flora Fauna

The flora and fauna of the national park is diverse: there are extensive forests on the slopes of the mountains and extensive grassy areas in the lowlands of the valleys. The endemic fern species Prenephrium bulusantum and Schefflera bulusanicum as well as an endemic orchid species of the genus Phagus and the wax flower Hoya davidcummingii are at home in the national park .

The Philippine deer is also native to large mammals in the national park, although it has become rarer in recent years.

There is no shortage of birds in the national park either, the Philippine duck ( Anas luzonica ), the Philippine eagle ( Spizaetus philippensis ), the downy pigeons ( Ptilinopus marchei ) and the striped uhu ( Bubo philippensis ) can be observed.
